Engage Team 2010 – a unique experience of mission
Each summer Wycliffe Bible Translators in the UK send teams of people to visit translation projects in different parts of the world. We call these Engage teams and this year there are planned 4 week trips to Cambodia, Indonesia and Cameroon.
The real purpose of Engage is to provide the opportunity for Christians in the UK [...]Feb 24th, 2010 | Filed under Wycliffe -
Burkina Faso on video – the story of my first visit to an African country
Eddie recorded some video of me on our trip to Burkina Faso. Opinions, scenery, pot holes and a loud shirt! What else would you expect from a trip to Africa.

Where there’s more going on than meets the eye
In the Bible the book of Psalms is a collection of poetry. Originally written in Hebrew, our translation into English misses out some of the beauty and technical skill of the original compositions.
Philip Hewer recently wrote about the challenges of translating Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, and in its original form, a [...] -
Wycliffe Bible Translators – UK website goes live
While swaning around in Africa, I left colleagues (Ruth and Paul) to get on with the proper work of getting the new website for Wycliffe Bible Translators in the UK ready to go live.
They did a fantastic job and the site’s now live and working well, you can find it at wycliffe.org.uk.
It’s all coming together [...]Jan 30th, 2010 | Filed under Wycliffe -
The wrong starting point
This trip is almost over. Tomorrow will involve one more hot day sat in a meeting room before getting on an air-conditioned plane in the evening to start the flight home. I’ve learnt a lot here, but two things are going to stick in my head above all else.
1 – Asking the wrong questions.
On Sunday [...] -
Sunday morning – Ouagadougou style!
Even I can understand the point of church starting at 8am when it gets as warm as it does here – 400 people crammed together at 11am just wouldn’t work.
This morning we visited the Assemblies of God church in Ouagadougou with a colleague from the centre here. It was everything you would expect from a [...] -
The wrong time to leave
I’m in no doubt that my impending Africa trip is going to be a fantastic experience, but I’m a little disappointed to be going away right now.
For the last few months we’ve been working really hard at updating the look and content of the Wycliffe Bible Translators material you’re most likely to come into contact [...] -
Burkina Faso or bust
It’s a busy time in the office so in an attempt to help my colleagues out with all the work I’ve decided to skip the country!
Tomorrow lunchtime Eddie and I are flying off to Burkina Faso in West Africa for 10 days. We’re doing some research, trying to identify Bible translation projects which could be [...]Jan 19th, 2010 | Filed under Wycliffe -
Reading in their own language
A good translation does much more than give people access to the Bible. It brings education and the chance for people to learn to read for themselves, regardless of their stage in life. In fact, a well written language can be understood by nationals far quicker than you may have imagined.
Cornish man in Africa writes [...]Jan 8th, 2010 | Filed under Wycliffe -
Back to work
January’s come as a bit of a shock. On Monday I was really up for getting back to work. The holiday had gone on for long enough and I was feeling really motivated and ready to get on with the challenges that the new year was going to bring.
Monday night, however, was not perfect. I [...]
